MEET THE S2S OWNER & DIRECTOR:
ROBERT VAI
With a Master's degree in Teaching and over a decade of experience in physical education and coaching, I’ve dedicated my career to helping athletes reach their rugby league potential. As both a rugby league coach and a PE teacher, I’m passionate about mentoring players and developing their skills.
My own journey as an athlete began when I was signed by the Wests Tigers at the age of 13. I had the privilege of playing for the Canberra Raiders' NYC team and later trained and trialled with the Penrith Panthers' NSW Cup team. While my playing career taught me the value of hard work and dedication, it wasn’t until I transitioned into coaching female players that I truly understood the importance of mastering the fundamentals of the game.
Coaching became a pivotal part of my life after a serious injury during a NSW Cup trial match. While recovering from ACL, MCL, and meniscus damage, I took on a coaching role at a school, working with a girls' rugby league team. Coaching from crutches was one of the most challenging experiences of my career, but it transformed my understanding of the game. I realised that teaching rugby league from the ground up, with a focus on proper fundamentals, was essential for player development.
Over the years, I’ve developed a deep passion for coaching female players. Growing up with two sisters and working as a year advisor in schools, I’ve always found it natural to connect with young female athletes. This connection has only strengthened my coaching, and I’ve been fortunate to learn from some of the best coaches in both junior rugby league and junior rugby union.
After several years working within different systems, including Tonga NSW Junior Rugby League and The Hills Sports High School, I wanted to apply the knowledge and experience I gained from these higher-level environments to all players who are eager to improve. This drive led me to create Steps 2 Success (S2S).
I hold an ASCA Level 1 in Strength and Conditioning and a Level 2 accreditation in Rugby League coaching. My focus is always on providing a holistic approach to player development, ensuring that each athlete I work with grows both on and off the field.
